Met Office +++++
specialized on uk weather (i.e. england, scotland, wales, n.ireland -and- ireland), this site gives you very detailed information on local weather conditions and five day forecasts for almost every place in the british isles.
Intellicast.com +++++
this site is focused on us weather but also offers good information on hundreds of international destinations, including five day forecasts.
wetterzentrale.de +++++
the site for the professional! it offers you no local weather information, but provides access to regional weather and climate data, primarily for europe, including satellite maps of every kind.
wetter.de +++++
the navigational features are not the best, but this site holds a lot of information for the traveller, including alpine weather info with three day forecast.
OeAV Alpenverein Wetterdienst +++++
general one day forecast for the alps, including a phone service, weather maps and satellite pictures.
Snow and Avalanche Information by SLF Davos +++++
this site links you to almost everything concerning winter sport conditions and avalanche threats: local conditions for switzerland, german, austrian and italian bulletins, forecasts and background information.
bergwetter.de +++++
a site that more or less offers the weather forecast of the Alpenverein, but additionally features a large searchable database with mountain weather for almost all alpine regions, mountain ranges and huts. everything you need - at one place.
NZZ Online +++++
If this site wasn't limited to Switzerland, it would be perfect: you can easily access a repeatedly updated general forecast, regional forecasts, precipitation radar and satellite images as well as the data of most Swiss weather stations.

National Geographic's MapMachine +++++
very comprehensive and very slow site. cook yourself a cup of tea while you are waiting for the pages to load - but once they are loaded, you will have access to huge and very functional collection of geographical and political maps around the world.
PCL Map Collection +++++
provided by the University of Texas, these pages offer quick and easy access to international political maps.
multimap.com +++++
click and zoom. it is that simple. with a focus on europe, you will find detailed maps with scales from 1:10.000.000 down to 1:5.000. perfect.
streetmap.co.uk +++++
almost as much fun as multimap, but limited to the uk. but this site has very strong search features and uses the reference for the uk: ordnance survey maps.
stadtplan.net +++++
quite a pity that this functionally strong site is limited to german city maps. it delivers excellent quality and functionality for literally every town in germany and is rather quick once the applet is loaded. requires flash5 on your machine.
reiseplanung.de +++++
primarily focused on german route planning, you will also find good features for europe-wide planning as well. rather quick and reliable information and loads of releted services, e.g. hotel guides, traffic information, weather infos etc.

Western Scottish Highlands: Fort William Online +++++
one of the best regional portals i have ever seen. no matter what you are interested in, you'll find it here: lodging, activities, ben nevis, weather, web cams and area guides for glen coe, ardnamurchan, great glen and glen nevis.
Italy: The Italian Tourist Web Guide ..for Aosta ..for Trebbia/Emilia-Romagna +++++
a comprehensive guide for every italian region, informative and fast. try it out!
Italy: Valle D'Aosta Outdoor +++++
a very nice website about hiking, mountain biking and skiing in the Aosta-Valley, which will be helpful to you if you speak Italian.
Greece: Oreivatein - To walk on Mountains ..mountaineering ..climbing ..hiking +++++
this portal has a clear scope: it explains everything related to "walking" onto the greek mountains. and it does so in such a well structured, comprehensive and passionate way, that it would deserve six stars. whatever you are looking for, you'll find it there: physical maps and flash animated maps, topos, trail descriptions, photos, link lists. and the information on the greek mountains, gorges and regions encompasses not just the "technical info" but also the mythological aspects and its flora and fauna. a site for body and soul...

ukclimbing.com +++++
if you need any information on climbing in the UK or anywhere on the British Isles, try this site. A "living" forum, good ressources, plenty of tour descriptions. If it wasn't geographically limited, it might be perfect.
lonelyplanet.com +++++
probably the leading portal for travelling worldwide. truly international in its scope and with comprehensive information ressources, it still lacks information on outdoor sport opportunities. but apart from this deficiency, lonelyplanet will provide you with all the information you need. concise guides, general information, reports, news and big communities will help you to "do the right things" wherever you go.
gorp.com +++++
one portal for almost every outdoor activity. Gorp features hiking, biking, skiing, fishing, paddling, camping,..., offers big communities and comprehensive guides. surprisingly this us-based portal covers many international destinations, too, e.g. in asia, europe and -of course- south america. very holistic concept, good navigation: clearly five stars!
backpacker.com +++++
one of the biggest portals for "wilderness travel". but as huge as it is, its focus remains on the americas. but for those who want to travel to north america, it is a good reference for planning your trip. even if you are not american, the gear testingg section and the forum are worth a visit.
Outside Online +++++
the online medium of Outside Mag, this site offers excellent reports on events and new gear. what i liked very much is the trail finder, but of course it is limited to the US, just as the whole site is highly focused on the americas. but it is slowly widening its horizon to international destinations....
bergwelt.de +++++
this german site is a good portal for every mountain-related activity, you'll find news, gear tests, tour descriptions etc. the functionality is rich, but layout and navigation are sometimes rather poor.
Bergsteiger online +++++
another good portal for alpinism, especially the big link-list, the region and tour descriptions are recommendable.
Expeditionsbergsteigen.com +++++
a starting point for everyone who is interested in expeditions to the highest mountains on earth - but the site's content doesn't reach the "critical mass" yet.
BergNews.com +++++
a portal with a good and informative tour archive, lots of useful ressources and relevant services. for the german speaking visitor a nice stop on the web.
Outdoor Magazin +++++
not as comprehensive as other portals, but offering good gear tests and a very good - and strongly frequented - forum. greatly improved after relaunch.
Desnivel +++++
the most important and very comprehensive spanish mountaineering and climbing magazine
alpineresearch.ch +++++
a very good link archive -catalogue style-, divided into a commercial and a non-commercial section. To the latter you can add your own URL.

The Open Directory Project: ..Mountaineering ..Hiking +++++
the ultimate reference for almost every catalogue based linklist and most major search engines. edited and maintained by human editors.
yahoo! Directory Listings "Outdoors": ..yahoo.com ..uk.yahoo.com +++++
the well selected and categorized directory for outdoor enthusiasts...
GravityDex: Mountaineering +++++
a catalogue-style link list for hiking, high alpine tours and climbing, including comments, votes and hit counter.
budgettravel.com's link list for hiking worldwide +++++
this list is flat and ugly, but very comprehensive :-) it covers almost every topic related to hiking around the globe: 1. Currency - World Time - Weather - Climate - International Dialing Instructions - World Maps - World ATM Machine Locations - 2. General Hiking Sites - 3. Individual Countries Listed in Alphabetical Order - 115+ Countries Listed.
climberportal.com +++++
this link list has a strong focus on climbing, e.g. bouldering, climbing halls and areas. although based in Germany, the catalogue is rather international concerning its scope and offers click-counter-based ranking of links.

basislager.ch +++++
How could I forget to put this site into my linklist? It is one of the best ressources for tours in the Swiss Alps, the feature I liked the most are the tour conditions, which are updated by basislager.ch-visitors on a regular basis.
gipfelbuch.at +++++
Similar to basislager.ch, the main feature of this page is the database with actual tour conditions. The difference basically is, that these infos are only entered by registered members of the site, which will usually be mountain guides. Quite valuable ressource!
alpintouren.at +++++
This archive is well maintained and contains lots of tour descriptions for bikers, climbers, hikers and alpinists. Most of the tours are described very detailed, including maps, photos and -if applicable- topos and the like. Just excellent.
derreisetipp.de +++++
This archive is fed by its users and contains already a remarkable number of links for destinations everywhere on the globe. The links are weighed by the number of hits they get and by the user's rating for the site. Straight and lean concept, with additional useful services - worth a visit!
Bergliste Jürgen Brenneis +++++
As you might've already guessed, this is a private homepage, listing the mountains Jürgen has already visited. But first of all, the descriptions are interesting to read and Jürgen really visited a lot of mountains around the world. Quite impressive and well worth a stop.....
almenrausch.at +++++
Regionally focused (Tirol, Südtirol, Osttirol, Bayern), this tour archive does a good job for everyone visiting Tirol and neighbouring regions. The descriptions are comprehensive and usually include a map and photos.
bergsteigen.at +++++
judging from its layout and navigational concept, I wouldn't recommend it. But at the end the content counts and this site is really good if you are interested in tour descriptions for rock climbing, ice climbing, via ferratas and ski tours in Austria. Take your time and try it out!
alpintipp.de +++++
the tour archive of the Deutscher Alpenverein, maintained by the members themselves. The quality of the entries ranges from mere links to detailled descriptions of tours.
wildernet +++++
probably the biggest archive for outdoor activities for the US. just pick a state and the sport you want!
alpenfuehrer.de +++++
nice archive, containing more than 170 entries for the alps. the list and the descriptions themselves are well structured. but the whole site seems to be under construction, or maybe it is meant to be that way...
tourenarchiv.de +++++
pretty fast archive containing approximately 200 tour descriptions for the alps, which are well structured and informative.
Reiseberichte.com +++++
Big and well strcutured database of tour descriptions all around the world. But the tour descriptions are of strongly varying quality, as Reiseberichte.com just provides the index and descriptions provided by private homepage owners.
fernwanderwege.de +++++
A site focussed on the long distance footpaths in Europe, i.e. actually Germany, Austria and UK. A good idea whcih needs just a little more content....
steinmandl.de +++++
This archive is still pretty small but features some interesting tours in the alps, focused on the Munich area. The tours themselves are described pretty detailed and informative.
walkseefeld.com +++++
A nice project that focusses on tours in the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountain ranges in Austrian Tirol. Updated monthly.
Hochhäuser und Berge - Highrises and Mountains by W.Leonhard +++++
136+ mountaineering and high alpine tours in the Alps. The descriptions are short and to the point, and still don't lack the personal appeal you might prefer if you have to decide whether to make a tour or not. One of my personal favorites...
Klettersteige.de +++++
this homepage lists a couple of ferratas in the Alps, with some very good and detailed tour descriptions. Hopefully, this well made site will grow with time further...
Berge der Welt by Hartmut Bielefeldt +++++
Bielefeldt obviously didn't spend much time on designing his homepage. he rather spent his time outside, on the mountains of this world. and because of this, his homepage is one of the most interesting, most international and biggest archives for mountain tours. awesome!
Walking and Hiking - World's largest Trail Database by Henk +++++
The site probably really offers the largest international trail database. It offers descriptions of trails by Hank himself and links to other submitted sites, e.g. therucksack.net. Well organized ressource!
summitpost.com +++++
What Henk's database for trails is summitpost.com for mountains: a large database -with great features- managed by the community members. And a community member can be everyone, no matter if you want to add a mountain, a route or simply some recent information or photos. The concept is highly successful and the information you'll find there is accurate and plenty. Try it out!

British Mountaineering Council +++++
Information on mountaineering, not only in Britain :-) it features news on expeditions, huts, hill walking, climbing etc.
Deutscher Alpenverein +++++
good content, but partly weak site structure and navigation. but the site is worth a visit, if you are planning any tour in the alps.
Oesterreichischer Alpenverein +++++
the usability of this site is, let's say, moderate. still, it is the reference for alpine tours and hiking in austria.

DAV Summit Club +++++
the commercial branch of the German Alpenverein offers training for every mountaineering activity and organizes trips to the mountains of the world - including expeditions to 8.000s of the Himalaya and to most of the seven summits....quite inspiring :-)
globetrotter.de +++++
the biggest german online shop for hiking, trekking and mountaineering gear. very good shop functionality, detailed gear descriptions - with a rating feature by visitors - and a load of additional services.
